Look the Part

RR 200 Look the Part Poker is a game of psychology.  It is said that you don’t play the cards you’re dealt, but the opponents at the table.  While you play, you gather information on their tells based on the cards they have and whatever comes up during the game.  But beyond that, you can also intimidate your foes.  How?  Spectacle, that’s how.  The thing is that people judge one another by appearances, and how well you look when you come to the table can mean the difference between victory and defeat.  Sometimes you might want to put your opponents off guard, which is a good strategy, but when it’s time to put on the pressure, nothing beats coming to play looking like you’re James Bond.  Dressing in a black tux and bow tie, with a slight dab of fine aftershave and cologne, will always impress people even if they’re poised well enough not to say anything.  What will dazzle them all the more will be the Sterling Spade Cufflinks on your French cuffs.  Wearing these will convey two things; one, you’re here to play, and two, you won’t need to take your jacket off.  That conveys the message that the pressure at stake isn’t bothering you in the slightest, and that is a powerful image.  That’s why your wardrobe, complete with find poker cufflinks, are, or should be, essential equipment in your arsenal of poker supplies.  Naturally, you don’t want to always pull this on someone, but when you do it will not go unnoticed.

Poker Wisdom

detailed image 1449 Poker WisdomYou learn by doing.  Reading does help; it gives you a guide to what you need to know and understand, but until you actually do what you are reading about you won’t really learn very much.  That is the difference between being skilled and just book smart.  Anyone can read a book, it’s another to actually go out there and do it.  With poker this is no exception.  If you’re a pro or an amateur looking to become pro, you need to learn from those who have been there before, and while reading the strategies of the champions is a great way to develop your skill, it’s also important to get some insight into how the champs played their hands in action. Poker Wisdom of a Champion by Doyle Brunson is an excellent companion-guide to Brunson’s Super System books by recollecting some of his most memorable hands and how he won, or even lost them, and what he was thinking at the time.  This is the kind of insight real players are looking for, the kind that shares the personal experience, thoughts and feelings that act as a good comparison for how they’re playing.  It’s rather like a football player watching video to get an idea of how opposing teams operate, and how well his own team is playing.  Poker books are important to any player’s poker supplies, but they are no substitute for real experience.  The experience that comes from being stung repeatedly by sound bluffs can often be more valuable than experience that only comes from winning, and that, coupled with sound strategy and advice, will get you into the pro leagues and beyond.

Cup Holders

detailed image 1901 Cup HoldersIt’s the little things that really stand out sometimes that make them stand out.  It’s one thing just to get by, but what do you need to do to become excellent?  By definition, excellent means something that excels beyond what is expected.  When you go to a poker room, you expect tables, chairs, cards, chips, and something for refreshments, right?  Of course.  And that’s easy.  Anyone can set up a poker room, right in their own back-yard if they want.  It doesn’t take a professional decorator to do that.  If you present something like that to your players, how likely are they to come back, assuming they’re not your friends?  If you have a poker room and you want players to play there, you have to consider this a business, and you’re competing with other places that you may not even be aware of.  So take some time to get poker supplies that shows one and all that you care about their comfort.  Get good poker tables and chairs, and poker table accessories such as good felt, rail cushions, and nice cup holders.  Yes, cup holders.  Remember, it’s the little things that really make something stand out in the mind and something like a Jumbo Brass Cup Holder for each of your stations will not only look great on the table but will definitely impress your guests.  Something like this is solid, won’t rust or stain, and can hold just about any conceivable cocktail or restaurant cup securely in a way that also looks attractive.  The more comfortable you can make your players feel, the more likely they’ll return to your tables for more action.

Time is Money

detailed image 2076 Time is MoneyBenjamin Franklin said that Time is Money, and this is certainly true when it comes to poker.  The more hands you play, the more money passes around the table, and the bigger the prizes.  With tournament poker, however, you have to keep your sessions sparing, because with enough time anyone could theoretically come out ahead.  The pro or amateur tournament player has to consider the element of time when he’s playing, because when the clock runs out, it all comes down to how many chips he’s got in his corner.  That added element brings another factor to the way a player plays his hands, because now he’s not just betting money, but time as well.  Do you risk a few extra minutes on a potential flush?  Or would you rather wait for a better deal?  For your poker room, you need to have quality poker timers that are clear enough for every player to see and this All-In Tournament Timer and Organizer is excellent way to manage your tournaments.  This timer comes complete with a dry erase board marked out to track the players at the table, the ante, the values for your chips, and what the bets are, and should be something quite standard to have among your own poker supplies.  This is excellent for both the professional poker establishment as well as for amateurs who’ve set up their own private rooms.   Keep track of your games in a professional and classy manner, and you’ll keep your players coming back to your poker room for more action.

The Trump Card

detailed image 2633 The Trump CardIt’s a saloon in Abilene, Texas called the Bull’s Head, a favorite haunt of every two-bit cowboy and prairie hustler this side of the Mississippi.  You’re playing a hand with a young saddle-thumper who’s still wet behind the ears, his old trail boss who’s looking to make a man out of him tonight, the saloon dandy out of St. Louis who won’t shut up about it, and the desperado from somewhere south of the Rio Grande.  It smells of whiskey and assorted aromas that come from a time before the internal combustion engine replaced horses.  You’ve got a full house and you know the kid’s got two pair.  The old man’s folded. The dandy’s going to lose his shirt in a minute, and you decide to call the desperado.  When he produces his four aces, in a flash you produce your Smith and Wesson revolver and send that man to his Maker, waking everyone up in the Bull’s Head as you then prove that he held out two more aces than he ought to have had.  This is one meaning of the artwork Found Pistol by Roderick Stevens Signed Giclee Art.  A tale of a time when a pistol always beat four aces anywhere.  That’s poker art, a kind of representation that shows what the game is always about; that you play the man across the table from you, not the cards you’re dealt.  Some men won’t be cheated, and if you haven’t the wherewithal to understand this basic fact, partner, you better find yourself another game.  This should be a standard motif in every poker room, to go with your poker supplies or as a gift to someone who appreciates the way poker was played as much as you.

Playing Advice

detailed image 1683 Playing AdviceWhatever card game you’re playing, there are things you need to watch out for.  Cheating is certainly one of them.  It comes in many forms, and in many guises.  Sometimes you just can’t tell except that you’re losing all the time and they’re winning.  In that case, you simply get up and walk away when you come to your cash limit.  Do not go beyond this limit with a charge card or by cutting a check for more chips, because that only leads to trouble, especially if the case that someone at the tables you’re playing at is cheating.  It does happen, believe it or not, even at the best casinos in the world with the best surveillance, and most especially in games where the house doesn’t care who wins or loses so long as it gets a cut, namely Poker or Baccarat.  Another easy way to safeguard yourself from cheaters is to look at the playing cards.  Look for any wear or tear in the cards that might indicate pattern to the cards. If you can see wear patterns in the cards from across the table, fold, get up and find another table.  While you’re at it, bring that up to the pit boss, say that the cards need to be changed out.  If they’re serious about their games (and not all casinos are) they’ll be playing with quality playing cards, buying them in bulk like these 24 Decks of CopaqT Playing Cards to supplement their poker supplies.  These cards are high quality and durable, made from plastic instead of paper, so they can be played thousands of times before they need changing out.  Gambling games are to be taken seriously; when real money is on the line, you can’t do anything less.

What is Success?

detailed image 1862 What is Success? What does success mean to you?  Is it just making money, or making something that lasts?  Any fool can make money; fools tend to spend it as fast as they make it.  It’s a wise man who knows how to make that money reproduce itself, and to do that you need to invest.  Investing in something means you want something to last in order to succeed even more and build even more.  This principle applies everywhere in life where there is something of value to invest in, be it your career, your love life, your family, your education, your business.  Your poker room is an investment.  Whether you run one professionally or as a devout amateur, you may start out rather ramshackle with small, squat tables that seat no more than four or five people including the dealer, cheap cards and plastic poker chips and poker supplies.  You can make some quick money staying that way, and maybe you’ll last a year or so.  If that’s your vision of success, then congratulations.  Meanwhile, you’ll be packing things up and moving on while other poker rooms and casinos are going at it full bore by doing what they can to make their customers, meaning their players, as comfortable as possible.  They’re out there getting real wooden poker tables that scream class, something that you feel you ought to dress formally to attend for the privilege of playing there.  Some go full bore, getting the Texas Holdem 96 Inch Mahogany Deluxe, with nice soft felt and a padded edge all around, with plenty of space for ten or even twelve players in a pinch.  They’re serving their players, while you’re making chump change with a cheap establishment that anyone can set up in a basement somewhere.  Is that success?

Cover Your Hand

detailed image 1580 Cover Your Hand Poker is thought to have evolved into a gentleman’s game, and this notion conjures up nicely composed men and women who would never ever cheat because that’s just bad form not to mention unfair.  But that’s just not true.  Sure, most players comport themselves nicely, and probably might not take a gander at what you have if they can help it.  But if, say, your cards happen to catch a nice draft from the overhead fan and happen to flip over, you can’t blame even the lowliest scoundrel at the table from seeing what you got.  When he’s not looking at his hand, the poker player is supposed to keep his cards flat on the table so nobody is tempted to see them.  Hence the appearance of card covers.  Poker card covers are little tokens the size of large coins, if you will, that have the heft to keep a sizable hand down flat in the most common weather patterns a casino or poker room can offer.  Designs such as the Big Slick Card Cover are rather common to comport to the game being played, but they come in a wide variety to suit any interest, including sports, music, and whatever suits your fancy.  If your players don’t have card covers, add a good amount to your poker supplies and hand them out when they arrive can take in their chips.  Poker and other card games can be a gentlemanly affair, provided you create both the atmosphere and the incentive to do so, and give everyone a chance to keep them all honest when they feel to be otherwise.

People Don’t Always Play Poker

Posted by admin | Poker Strategy | Wednesday 15 September 2010 6:11 am

detailed image 2086 People Don’t Always Play PokerIt may come as quite a surprise to you, but did you know that there are other games other than poker?  And that people play them?  And they’re quite popular!  It’s understandable if this comes as a bit of a shock.  What other games might be nearly as interesting as poker?  Well, blackjack is one. If you travel internationally, you might find baccarat to be quite in vogue.  It’s the game Sean Connery was playing as James Bond in the film Dr. No.  Both of these games share a common theme in that you’re betting on the result closest to the bust number.  In the case of blackjack, this number is 21.  In the case of baccarat, it’s 9.  Both games often play with a large number of cards than just one deck in order to create an adequate mix that prevents too many patterns from coming up and keeping the amateur card counters at bay (doesn’t really stop the professional ones, though).  To prevent a morass of cards that the dealer has to contend with, six or more decks are often placed in a special card shoe.  If you’re thinking of adding either of these games to your poker room, consider getting the Heavy Acrylic 6 Deck Blackjack Dealing Shoe to your poker supplies.  This clear plastic heavy-duty shoe shows that there are, indeed, several decks of cards for one and all to see, and slides very nicely along felt surfaces when you need to pass the shoe around in the game of baccarat.  Adding such a variety of games to your poker room with these poker accessories will only add to the appeal of your venue, and will help you to set a new trend in your area.  Being the first to do so is like being on the ground floor of a lucrative business.
